Observed changes in heavy daily precipitation over the Nordic-Baltic region

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Nordic-Baltic region has experienced numerous flooding episodes resulting from heavy rainfall. Such events are costly and may potentially threaten the safety of population. In this paper we present a temporally long spatially dense dataset annual maximum daily precipitation their date occurrence measured in large covering Fennoscandia Baltics (Dyrrdal et al., 2021, doi:10.11582/2021.00015). We analyse long-term (1901–2020) changes at 138 stations short-term (1969–2020) 724 for both maxima occurrence. Further, assess climatology including record evens, as well design values. Results show majority positive trends 5-year return level, with hotspots southeast Norway, southern Sweden southwest Finland. Generally, occur somewhat later year now compared to beginning last century. level is relatively homogeneous across region, values between 30 50 mm, except few lower Finland high mainly exceeding 70 mm west coast Norway. • Dataset 1-day (AM1d) region. Increased intensity AM1d during years many stations. generally 1900. Decadal cyclic development. homogeneous, higher West-Norway.

Recent observed and simulated changes in precipitation over Africa

Multiple observational data sets and atmosphere-only simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 are analyzed to characterize recent rainfall variability and trends over Africa focusing on 1983–2010. Data sets exhibiting spurious variability, linked in part to a reduction in rain gauge density, were identified. The remaining observations display coherent increases in annu...

Validation of ERA-Interim Precipitation Estimates over the Baltic Sea

European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis total precipitation estimates are validated against ten years of in situ precipitation measurements onboard of ships over the Baltic Sea. A statistical analysis for binary forecasts and mean rain rates derived from all data show a good agreement with observations. However, a closer look reveals an underestimation ...

Heavy Daily Precipitation Frequency over the Contiguous United States: Sources of Climatic Variability and Seasonal Predictability

By matching large-scale patterns in climate fields with patterns in observed station precipitation, this work explores seasonal predictability of precipitation in the contiguous United States for all seasons. Although it is shown that total seasonal precipitation and frequencies of less-than-extreme daily precipitation events can be predicted with much higher skill, the focus of this study is o...

Hydrological Assessment of Daily Satellite Precipitation Products over a Basin in Iran

In order to measure precipitation as the main variable for estimating the runoff and designing hydraulic structures, the satellite algorithm products that have the proper spatial and temporal coverage, can be used. In this study, at first, the daily streamflow simulation of Sarough-Cahy River from the Zarinehroud basin was conducted through the artificial neural network (ANN) and ground data of...

Observed heavy precipitation increase confirms theory and early models

The approach to illustrate observed changes in heavy precipitation has been repeated for gridded daily precipitation data for the US. Fig.S1a shows the same result as Fig.2b but for the contiguous US east of 100°W, specifically the region between 65° and 100°W and 25° and 49°N with data coverage (see domain in Fig.S5). Note that the period differs somewhat from Fig.2b since only data up to 2006...
